Elite athlete students

Information on special arrangements for elite athlete students

Elite student athletes who are members of either the Metropolitan Sports Academy Urhea or the Vaasa Region Sports Academy VRIA may receive a certain degree of flexibility in their studies depending on their athletic level. Both Finnish and international elite athelete students may apply for membership in Urhea or VRIA. Membership applications can be submitted through the Urhea and VRIA websites.

If you have questions about special arrangements, flexibility in your studies, or other matters related to combining elite sports and studies at Hanken, please contact:

Hanna Sipiläinen-Nygård (students in Helsinki)
Britt-Mari Siironen (students in Vaasa)

If needed, for example because of training camps or competitions, some flexibility regarding attendance at individual classes may be possible. Whether this can be arranged, and whether any alternative assignments are required, is decided by the course examiner. Flexibility regarding attendance cannot be guaranteed.

Please contact the course examiner already at the beginning of the course to discuss your situation.

Students at Urhea level 1 or 2, or the corresponding levels at VRIA, may be allowed to take a paper-based or digital on-site exam remotely (for example, because of a training camp or competition) under the supervision of their coach. Remote exams can be organized provided that:

a) the exam takes place at the same time as for the other students on the course
b) remote exams are only granted occasionally due to circumstances such as training camps or competitions (not for multiple exams because the student permanently lives abroad)
c) the examiner approves the arrangement.

Students who wish to take an exam remotely should contact tenter@hanken.fi no later than one week before the exam. This is required so that their athletic level can be verified and they can receive instructions on how the remote exam will be arranged. Hanken’s exam coordinators will process the request and take care of the practical arrangements.

Students at Urhea level 3, or the corresponding level at VRIA, are not eligible to take exams remotely. These students may, however, be granted some flexibility regarding deadlines for assignments or similar coursework, provided that:

a) the student contacts the examiner well before the deadline
b) the examiner agrees to the arrangement.

Elite athelete students can book an appointment with Hanken's Urhea/VRIA contact person to discuss how to best combine their studies with their sports career.

Students in Helsinki can book a time for study counselling in Teams in the booking system for Helsinki students (choose Urhea) or by emailing Hanna Sipiläinen-Nygård.

Students in Vaasa can come to drop-in study counselling or book a Teams meeting by emailing studievagledare-vasa@hanken.fi.
