Risk and Sustainability in Supply Chains: A Review and Future Research Directions

Risk and sustainability aspects in supply chains have received significant attention over the past decade. While each of these areas is extensively researched from a variety of aspects, explicit investigation on the intersection between them is still at an embryonic stage. Recent trends have demonstrated the importance of this line of research and the interdependencies between risk and sustainability. Given that firms ought to manage their risks effectively in order to be more sustainable, it is critical to understand this relationship in a more comprehensive manner. To this end, the contributions of this paper are two-fold. First, we undertake a systematic literature review in addressing this intersection by presenting important conceptual, theoretical, and empirical developments in this area. Second, we develop a risk/sustainability matrix in unearthing the critical gaps in the literature and present opportunities for future research.
