Can prediction reshape economics? New research shows that prediction is not just a technical exercise, it can transform how we understand and apply economic principles.

Jannica Fagerholm, managing director of the Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation and seasoned board professional, has received the award Alum of the Year at Hanken School of Economics.

Hanken School of Economics participated in a training programme organised by THL to strengthen anti-racist practices in the workplace. The aim was to explore proactive measures for preventing racism and eliminating its impacts in their own workplaces.

How can we ensure that society continues to function during crises in the future? This is the central question of a new research project in which Hanken School of Economics is participating, together with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Policymakers and experts have long criticised the requirement for unanimous agreement in multilateral negotiations, pointing to a tendency for unanimity rule to produce delays and sometimes deadlock. Until recently, this phenomenon has eluded attempts at explanation in terms of rational behavior.

New research shows that African governments’ external borrowing can enhance corporate access to capital, not hinder it. The reason is that external debt enhances market confidence. Unlike domestic borrowing, external debt brings fresh capital into the economy, enabling firms, especially listed and internationally active ones, to access financing more easily.

Students will soon be able to take one entrance exam and use it to apply to several universities and fields of study. The reform will significantly reduce the number of entrance exams. This will make it possible to adjust the schedule of admissions so that those selected through certificate-based admission do not need to prepare for the entrance exams.

The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the collaboration among nine European universities. Hanken School of Economics has been involved in the collaboration since May 2022, and now with the renewed funding will become full member of the ENGAGE.EU alliance.

Demand for agricultural commodities in the EU are driving land use change in biodiversity-rich countries in for example Africa and Latin America, leading to major biodiversity losses. Hanken School of Economics is part of a large EU-project that aims to generate new knowledge and tools on how to make agrifood systems more sustainable.

Conflicts of interest caused by uneven information are everyday in many high-growth ventures and stock listed companies but many of the problems could be alleviated.

Dr. Daniel Pasternack has on 1.10.2021 been appointed Professor of Practice at Hanken for a period of three years. Pasternack has a background as an entrepreneur and is the CEO of the asset management company Elite Alfred Berg.

KvarkenSat is a joint small satellite between the Ostrobothnian provinces and Västerbotten. It is due to be launched into space in just over a year, with drawings by children and young people on board on the satellite. The small satellite is the result of cooperation across the Kvarken. It also demonstrates that the conquest of space is not just for space superpowers.

Assistant professor Maria Ehrnström-Fuente's current research project "Worlds in transition" focuses on what "economics" really is from an ecological perspective. This was also the starting point for a panel discussion during the Science Carnival in Vaasa on 19.11.2021.

A course ideated, planned and taught by students is currently taking place for the first time in Hanken’s history. The course Sustainable Venture Creation enables students to develop ventures that work towards the UN’s sustainable development goals.

Finnish universities’ vice presidents for education agreed on launching a joint development project to develop student admissions. Entrance examinations will be digitalised, their content developed, and their number significantly reduced. The needs for development were identified jointly by the universities particularly as a result of admissions carried out over the course of the national state of emergency. The development work will be discussed at universities during the autumn.

Many high-tech products contain high-demand metals. These metals are of strategic importance to the world economy but will likely be difficult to access in the future. As critical materials, they are part of society’s critical infrastructure and should therefore be recycled and reused to a greater degree.

Every autumn, a national questionnaire is sent out to all those who have graduated from a university in Finland following up on their careers. According to the latest results, Hanken is placed at the very top by graduates with a master’s degree in business when evaluating their education programmes.

New digital technologies such as 3D printing, 3D modelling and scanning technologies and AI technologies is changing how designs are created and digitalising thewhole creation process. New research points out that not all works created digitally deserve intellectual property protection in the EU.

The nationwide recommendation for remote work has ended and many workplaces have switched to combining remote work and office work in new ways. Different hybrid models will require more planning by both managers and employees and in some cases also redesigning of the office spaces.

The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland donates 1 000 000 euros to Hanken and the fundraising campaign Count on Hanken. The campaign has now received donations exceeding 2,8 million euros.

Hanken School of Economics annually appoints the Alumni of the Year, a Hanken Alumnus/Alumna who has been topical in the past year and has received acknowledgement for their engagement in society. The Alumnus/Alumna has also kept contact with Hanken and shown an interest in the development of Hanken after their graduation. This year, Hanken appointed Heidi Schauman as the Alumna of the Year.

In collaboration with Novia University of Applied Sciences and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), Hanken is currently calling for expressions of interest in developing hydrogen infrastructure in the Ostrobothnia region, as part of the H2 Ecosystem Roadmap. The project, funded by the EU's regional development funds, has been approved by the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia.

On 17 September 2021 Hanken School of Economics arranged an inaugural installation ceremony for three new professors, Mats Ehrnrooth (Management and Organisation), Kaj Storbacka (Hanken Foundation Professor) and Kim Ittonen (Accounting).

Professor Kaj Storbacka is appointed Dean of Executive Education and Corporate Relations at Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki. In his task Storbacka will be responsible for corporate relations and fundraising.

Within the agreement between Hanken School of Economics and the Fulbright Center, three US scholars will visit Hanken during spring 2021. Professors Nezih Altay, Brian Gibson and Leigh Anne Liu will conduct research at Hanken and hold a public seminar on their findings. In 2017, The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre conducted an audit of Hanken’s quality system and awarded it a quality label that is valid for six years. In February, Hanken signed up for the next national evaluation taking place in 2023.

The number of bankruptcies last year in Finland was lower than during the years leading up to the crisis. Thus, it has previously been predicted that a wave of bankruptcies could strike in the spring of 2021.

Michael Seelen, 41, graduated from Hanken in Vaasa in 2003 with Computational Finance as his major. Now he lives in Middleton, Wisconsin, where he works as a Director of Risk Management and Data Analysis at Hy Cite Enterprises.

Last year Hanken committed to be carbon neutral by 2030. As a step towards that goal, Hanken has now compensated for its calculated emissions from 2019.

The HUMLOG Institute is coordinating a research project where the researchers are investigating how different countries have handled the Covid-19 pandemic, the economic impact and how to tackle social media disinformation.

Open access (OA) is a new way of disseminating the results of science openly on the internet, in contrast to traditional subscription-based access. A new study suggests that most of pioneering OA journals led by independent scholars (indie) and OA journals published in the Chinese language do not rely on article processing charges and therefore need to find long term solution to survive and flourish.

Financial modelling is the art of searching for the best quantitative solution to the problem. Since the stock market crash of October 1987, modelling implied volatility increasingly became a non-trivial issue.

This year’s Anders Wall scholarship is awarded to Hanken student William von der Pahlen. The scholarship of 125 000 SEK is the biggest one awarded to a student at Hanken. The award ceremony will take place later today in Stockholm.

The investigation on the administrative and supporting functions at Hanken is ongoing and the process will continue throughout spring 2018.
