How can we ensure that society continues to function during crises in the future? This is the central question of a new research project in which Hanken School of Economics is participating, together with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Policymakers and experts have long criticised the requirement for unanimous agreement in multilateral negotiations, pointing to a tendency for unanimity rule to produce delays and sometimes deadlock. Until recently, this phenomenon has eluded attempts at explanation in terms of rational behavior.

As part of a project course in corporate social responsibility and humanitarian logistics at Hanken School of Economics, students have been working closely with various organisations to address real-world sustainability challenges. One student group focused on Hanken itself, developing a method to measure the university’s broader sustainability impacts, going beyond traditional carbon footprint reporting.

There is a perception that Human Resource Management (HRM), which focuses on improving employee performance and engagement, fosters increased competition among colleagues and creates an environment where bullying can thrive. Hanken student Nea Backström was rewarded by the Family Business Network Finland for her master’s thesis. The €500 prize is awarded annually to master's or doctoral theses on family business or family ownership.

The Hanken alum Stefan Larsson’s “Dare to Dream” scholarship will be awarded to one Hanken student who is currently pursuing master studies and aims to graduate in 2026. This is the second time the scholarship is awarded. The recipient will have Stefan Larsson, CEO of PVH Corp., as a mentor for one year and gets to visit him for a week in New York.

Hanken alum Yesmith Sánchez started working for the DEI consultancy company Inklusiiv four years ago when diversity, equity, and inclusion issues were not spoken of broadly in Finland. Since then, Sánchez has been very busy helping a lot of organisations build more diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces.

The Finnish Bachelor's Graduate Survey is a national survey that collects feedback from new bachelor’s graduates about their bachelor's studies. The results are compared to the national average and this year Hanken scored the best points ever.

In 2008 the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) published a mandatory sustainability reporting requirement which obligates selected types of listed companies to disclose sustainability information. However, according to new research this regulation fails to promote sustainable practices and may lead to unintended economic consequences.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken's Board elected Professor Mika Gabrielsson as Dean of education. He was elected for a three-year term starting on 1 August 2023. Gabrielsson is currently professor in international business with specialisation in marketing and sales at the University of Eastern Finland.

Companies within the EU need to take greater responsibility to prevent social and environmental problems. This is also the case in developing countries, where the majority of production takes place. For that reason, a number of EU corporate responsibility regulations are being prepared.

What’s the hardest part of decision making? Many leaders focus too much on the risk of a bad result, and when we do, we risk being less innovative and creative, stated Mona Riabacke, Ph.D. in Risk and Decision Analysis. The Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG) is working with the most pressing issues in our world: from the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine and the enormous challenges presented by climate change. This week the Institute celebrated its 15th anniversary.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

At the beginning of the year, a new funding act determining the state's research and development funding in 2024–2030 entered into force. In practice, the implementation of the Act means that the central government budgeted approximately EUR 260 million more for RDI activities each year in 2024-2030.

On 14 March 2023 Hanken School of Economics arranged an inaugural installation ceremony for three new professors, Martin Fougère (Management and organisation), Johanna Gummerus (Marketing), and Jennie Sumelius (Management and organisation).

Hanken student Henrik Helenius has been awarded the Anders Wall scholarship of approximately 20,000 euros for having excelled in entrepreneurship and creative thinking. The alliance consists of leading European universities in business, economics, and the social sciences, which aims to provide European citizens with the set of skills and competences needed to tackle major societal challenges.

According to a recent survey, student well-being has increased significantly during the autumn semester as Hanken has been able to reopen for normal activities. Yet there are also students, especially at bachelor level, who feel both lonely and want support with their studies.
