The Nordic School of Service is introduced to Japan. While there was previously a Japanese translation of the book, "Service Management and Marketing," which embodies the Nordic School approach, this current publication delves deeper.

In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

As a gesture of gratitude towards Hanken’s honorary donors, Hanken has appointed donor awards to the best performing bachelor and master students, as well as the best performing outgoing exchange students from Hanken.

The Summer Schools in Humanitarian Operations Management (SOMA) was hosted from December 9th to December 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a second part hosted from June 16th to June 20th of 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. PW totalförsvarsresiliens i NATO project aims to explore the societal implications of NATO membership on critical infrastructure and crisis preparedness in Finland and Sweden. With the recent geopolitical shifts, including the war in Ukraine and both countries joining NATO, the project seeks to understand how these changes impact societal resilience. The study will compare the different approaches and journeys of Finland and Sweden in the sphere of total defence and comprehensive security. It will also explore how critical infrastructure and supply chains need to be reoriented to support Nordic integration across defence and crisis preparedness. The research is a collaboration between the Swedish Defence University and the Hanken School of Economics, leveraging their expertise in total defence and crisis preparedness.

CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

One of our objectives in our research sub-strategy is to advocate responsibility and sustainability. To achieve this we aim to strongly encourage researchers’ efforts towards open science and open access of publications as well as expect all researchers to link their research projects and outputs to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, most of our daily interactions have completely shifted to the digital world. In light of this shift caused by the outbreak, Virtual Business Lab - Meetup was created. It is a concept that aims to provide the community spirit of the Hanken Business Lab in a digital setting.

A theme week around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be held for the second time at Hanken in Helsinki and Vaasa from 19th to 26th November 2019. Students, staff and stakeholders are warmly welcome on board to collectively realise the global goals and sustainable development. All exhibitions and events are free of charge!

The Corona-virus outbreak is continuing to spread. By beginning of February, the number of infected people surpasses 42,000 infections, and the death toll continues to rise. As authorities and responders are struggling to contain the spread, news about mass quarantine camps or shortages of personal protective equipment threaten the health systems globally, fuelled by rumours and mis-information.
The disruptions of (medical) supply chains, the lack of capacity to treat patients and the spread of rumours fuel an atmosphere of uncertainty and mistrust, hampering an effective response. While traditional models of disease outbreaks largely focus on infection rates, new methods are needed to integrate behaviour from the bottom up, and integrated in macro-level models to coordinate the response world-wide.

The Department focuses on the two major subjects of Accounting and Commercial law. These subjects are integrated and linked together in order to offer the student a more holistic view of business, law and commercial practice. The Department's courses afford students the opportunity to study an exciting range of related topics. Research and teaching at the Department are  aimed towards giving students a good theoretical foundation, in addition to the acquisition of practical and relevant skills required in the marketplace.

Critical materials refer to either materials that are not sufficiently available or materials that are dangerous. It is important to secure the reliable and undisturbed availability of metals and other materials necessary for ICT applications, communications and new environmental and energy technologies. In the circular economy of cities, critical materials are needed for instance, in households, buildings, infrastructures, and high technology products. These critical materials must be reclaimed for recycling and reuse towards the end of the product lifecycle.

Hanken has two parallel tenure tracks, a research-oriented tenure track and a teaching-oriented tenure track. The qualification requirements are set in the Personnel Instruction. Hanken's mentorship programme continues to attract a large number of applications. Over the past year, a record number of pairs, 89 in total, have had regular meetings both in Helsinki and Vaasa. HNPW is the largest event of its kind, providing a collaborative space for practitioners and experts from a large variety of humanitarian stakeholders. The HUMLOG Institute participates by hosting several interesting sessions about ongoing projects. This year the HUMLOG Institute is hosting 7 sessions.

The DigCBA project contributes to the responsible use of digital cash-based assistance (CBA) in refugee crisis to support policy makers with the selection and use of the most suitable digital technologies (e.g., mobile money, blockchain) for delivering CBA to refugees. The project consists of an interdisciplinary team of humanitarian operations researchers with the focus on ICT, supply chain management, information systems and organizations studies.

All Hanken graduates represent the school and are thus ambassadors. Hanken is very proud and grateful for all the role models that exist around the school and welcomes collaboration with alumni. Within Hanken there is also a group of alumni who are involved in the development of Hanken’s core operation and are thereby appointed Hanken Ambassadors. The Hanken Ambassadors contribute greatly to the development of Hanken as an international business school with close ties to the business community.

Hanken Centre of Accounting, Finance and Governance has created an academic informal collaboration network of established researchers within the subjects of Accounting, Finance and Governance: The AFG Centre Honorary Fellows.

It is a great pleasure to invite you to the 2024 BACC Seminar in Vaasa, Finland. The seminar, organized for the second time, is a collaboration between the business schools in the Botnia region. We welcome submissions from Faculty and PhD Students addressing all aspects of financial accounting and/or auditing. BACC is organized every two years.
