A new one-year master's programme in sustainability reporting and financial analysis will start as a cooperation between Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa and Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics. This is Finland’s first one-year master’s programme on a university level.

Ett nytt ettårigt magisterprogram i hållbarhetsrapportering och finansiell analys inleds som ett samarbete mellan Svenska handelshögskolan i Vasa och Handelshögskolan vid Umeå universitet. Programmet är det första ettåriga magisterprogrammet på universitetsnivå i Finland.

“In spite of the fact that Finland for several years in a row has been named the “happiest country in the world”, our country faces a number of challenges. One of these challenges is how to adapt to demographic changes, in particular to the aging of the population”, said Rector Ingmar Björkman at the Hanken School of Economics' Opening of the Academic Year ceremony on 2 September 2024.

The business incubator Hanken Business Lab at Hanken School of Economics has been granted €750,000 by the Louise and Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation for the next five years. The agreement also includes a reservation for the same amount for an additional five years, resulting in a total of €1.5 million. Hanken will see to it that the donation is matched with €1.5 million.

In recent years Hanken School of Economics has welcomed about 80 new international students each autumn. Most international students join Hanken’s Master’s programmes in English, which offer major studies in the main business-school disciplines. For the 2023-2024 academic year, Hanken has international students from 35 countries around the world.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken's Board elected Professor Mika Gabrielsson as Dean of education. He was elected for a three-year term starting on 1 August 2023. Gabrielsson is currently professor in international business with specialisation in marketing and sales at the University of Eastern Finland.

Professor Lisa Ellram’s interest in the future of the planet grew early on, leading up to her studying and publishing research on environmental sustainability for over two decades now. As a Fulbright Distinguished Professor at Hanken School of Economics, she has been focusing on the role of supply chain in the circular economy.

CERS was represented in the Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) Annual Conference in Montery, AMA SERVSIGS conference in Glasglow and Frontiers in Boston this summer.

Hanken’s bachelor degree studies in Swedish attract applicants from both Finland and Sweden. One third of all applicants for Hanken in the joint application in the spring of 2022 are Finnish speaking.

During the spring, a course in cultural sustainability and communications was organized for the first time at Hanken. The course was a response to the students' interest in courses in the humanities.

With recent demographic trends towards ageing populations in many Western countries, issues of older age, ageing and ageism are now higher on some political and organizational agendas than in previously. One central question of policy interest on different levels of decision-making has been to prolong working and employed life.

According to the financial statement for 2013, approved by the Board of Hanken on 9 April 2014, Hanken's results fulfilled expectations with regard to both the budget and resource allocation. During the year Hanken continued to reinforce its position as a research-oriented business school with a strong international profile, and it was able to do so from a solid financial standing.
