Organizing conflict: The rhizome of Jihad
Abstract
In this essay, we discuss the benefit of understanding organizing through the becoming of the ‘rhizomatic’ (social) ontology. We argue that this rhizomatic ontology of becoming helps us understand various social phenomena without strong agents, deterministic ‘deep structures’, or any other simple reasons. For the rhizome, ‘time’ and ‘space’ are irrelevant – it is everywhere and nowhere – and underlies the human social condition. The emergence of organizing is a manifestation of a rhizomatic basis of things, seen in nomadic strategies of pursuing revolutionary aims and resisting power hegemonies. Having abandoned the idea of essence, we discuss the case of Jihadism in the Middle East, thus contributing to understanding the emergence of conflict from a rhizomatic perspective.
