PW totalförsvarsresiliens i NATO project aims to explore the societal implications of NATO membership on critical infrastructure and crisis preparedness in Finland and Sweden. With the recent geopolitical shifts, including the war in Ukraine and both countries joining NATO, the project seeks to understand how these changes impact societal resilience. The study will compare the different approaches and journeys of Finland and Sweden in the sphere of total defence and comprehensive security. It will also explore how critical infrastructure and supply chains need to be reoriented to support Nordic integration across defence and crisis preparedness. The research is a collaboration between the Swedish Defence University and the Hanken School of Economics, leveraging their expertise in total defence and crisis preparedness.

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, most of our daily interactions have completely shifted to the digital world. The Nordic School of Service is introduced to Japan. While there was previously a Japanese translation of the book, "Service Management and Marketing," which embodies the Nordic School approach, this current publication delves deeper.

In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

The winners are two distinguished pioneers of service research branch, Professors Mary Jo Bitner and Stephen Brown from Arizona State University. We wanted to know more about their thoughts of services marketing and academic life!

CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

This 2020-2021 Hanken Vaasa mentor-mentee relationship is – if not a match made in heaven – then clearly one that is full of respect, warmth and learning. Critical materials refer to either materials that are not sufficiently available or materials that are dangerous. It is important to secure the reliable and undisturbed availability of metals and other materials necessary for ICT applications, communications and new environmental and energy technologies. In the circular economy of cities, critical materials are needed for instance, in households, buildings, infrastructures, and high technology products. These critical materials must be reclaimed for recycling and reuse towards the end of the product lifecycle.

The Department focuses on the two major subjects of Accounting and Commercial law. These subjects are integrated and linked together in order to offer the student a more holistic view of business, law and commercial practice. The Department's courses afford students the opportunity to study an exciting range of related topics. Research and teaching at the Department are  aimed towards giving students a good theoretical foundation, in addition to the acquisition of practical and relevant skills required in the marketplace.

The Summer Schools in Humanitarian Operations Management (SOMA) was hosted from December 9th to December 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a second part hosted from June 16th to June 20th of 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. This PhD and Masters level intensive course will dive into the operations surrounding humanitarian operations and disaster assistance with instruction from globally recognized leaders in the humanitarian operations research field. The summer school also serves as a forum for operations management students from all over the world to exchange research, concepts, and develop internetional networks.

The Hanken PhD Programme corresponds to four years of full-time studies, during which you produce a doctoral thesis (180 credit points) and complete 60 ECTS credit points of coursework.

Hanken's alumni have the opportunity to subscribe to the monthly Alumni Letter.

Here you find information about which courses you as a co-op student at Hanken can take during the academic year 2025-2026. Applications are accepted continuously until two weeks before the course start.

Application for the fall term of 2026 opens 1.8.2026. Application for the spring term of 2027 opens 1.12.2026. The course offering for 2026-2027 is published before midsummer.
