Studies in English

Studies in Business Communication in English provide you with the English communicative skills you will need to pursue a career during and after your university studies. The English introductory courses aim to help students achieve operational proficiency within a business context (CEFR skill level C1). Subsequent courses address a variety of areas within business and cultural contexts at C1 or C2 levels to help students attain communicative proficiency, the ability to work in English with ease, and the academic skills required by the studies.

 

English as a minor

The minor in English Business Communication strengthens your communication skills as well as your competitive edge. The minor consists of 25 ECTS. Please read more about the minor on a dedicated page: English as a minor.

According to Hanken's Teaching Awards system, courses that have received top evaluations from students are noted annually. English courses offered in Helsinki:

5167 Business Communication (Helsinki) (6 ECTS)

The course gives an insight into what constitutes effective and efficient oral and written managerial communication in today’s ever-changing (global) business environment. The course is mandatory for Hanken Bachelor degree students in Helsinki.

5101-E Business Terminology (Helsinki - Vaasa) (2 ECTS)

The course focuses on the skills in business terminology. It is intended for students beyond their first year who want to deepen their knowledge of English business terminology. The course is an online course in Moodle, divided into seven weeks of exercises.

5138 Each one teach one - English (Helsinki) (2 ECTS)

Each One Teach One course means that two native speakers of different languages (English, Finnish, French, German, Russian, Spanish or Swedish) meet informally to learn each other's language. The responsible teacher provides the students with a work scheme that they follow during the course.

5148 Presentation skills (Helsinki) (2 ECTS)

The objective of this course is to hone your pitching skills. The course comprises an introductory lecture, consultation sessions and a workshop in which you deliver an individual presentation and receive peer and lecturer feedback.

5158 Team Communication Skills (Helsinki) (6 ECTS)

The course deals with interpersonal communication skills required for team environments. The focus is on themes relevant to teamwork such as motivation, relational engagement, trust, decision making and problem solving. This intensive course is highly interactive and task oriented. Group work, readings and self-reflective writing will enhance your understanding of your own and others’ interpersonal communication skills. The course is especially beneficial for students who already have some experience in teamwork, and/or who are interested in human behaviour and personal development.

5160 Academic Writing (Helsinki) (5 ECTS)

This course focuses on the academic thesis or paper: structure and coherence, academic language and style, and writing conventions. The course is primarily intended for Masters students, and it is suggested for students taking a minor in Business Communication and it is highly recommended to students on the English Master's programmes.

5162 Communication Clinic (Helsinki) (2 ECTS)

This course offers a Writers’ Workshop which is open to all Hanken students and exchange students to refresh and reinforce their acquired business communication skills. Through case studies and peer reviews the student is able to develop writing that is more audience- and purpose-focused.

5164 The Power of Language and Memory in Business Interactions (Helsinki) (3 ECTS)

Within the last two decades, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation in the ways we connect, trade and communicate. It is evident that the world is now interacting more than ever in history, which implies that effective communication and learning has become vital for professional and personal success. The course provides participants with the opportunity to learn and practice communication and learning strategies and techniques for creating a flow of empowering communication and learning. More specifically, participants will be equipped with contemporary theoretical and practical knowledge from the fields of communication, learning and neuroscience.

5165 Compassionate Communication in Organizations (Helsinki) (3 ECTS)

Recent studies in organizational studies show that compassion has become a professional competence, which can increase organizational wellbeing, performance and success. This course introduces compassion as a work-life capability, which can be learned through the development of socio-cognitive skills. More specifically, the course focuses on compassionate communication and the manner in which it builds on peoples’ ability to adapt to intense work-related circumstances and situations, enhances meaningful and productive collaboration within and across organizations, and creates sustainable and performance-enhancing organizational cultures. The course content is based on research from the fields of management and organizational communication, behavioural science, neuroscience, and socio-cognitive psychology.

5166 Communication, Learning and Cognition: An Alliance for Professional Success (Helsinki) (3 ECTS)

This course aims to equip participants with cognitive and learning skills, which will enhance their individual abilities to become successful professional communicators within diverse business-related contexts. More specifically, the purpose is to provide tools to overcome mind level barriers, which prevent people from making the most of their intellectual, creative, and emotional capabilities for professional purposes. Additionally, the course advocates the notion of diverse thinking and the way in which it can be used to improve communication and collaboration within and across (multinational) organizations. The course draws from research from the fields of behavioral science, psychology, linguistics, (dialogic) learning and neuroscience.

5168 Cultural Sustainability and Communication (Helsinki) (4 ECTS)

The course provides participants with the opportunity to learn about visual arts and sustainability theories. It includes field trips and interaction with experts from the field. Participants are encouraged to constantly reflect on the theories and expose themselves to the forms of art, individually or in groups. At the end of the course the participants will create materials for a project related to cultural heritage and sustainability in cooperation with one or more stakeholders.

5169-E Working Life Skills for Experts and Team Leaders (Helsinki – Vaasa) (2 ECTS)

During the course the students will learn, with the help of hands-on case assignments, how to succeed in job search and in employment contract and salary negotiations. The students will acquire practical skills for real working life situations by exercising team leader roles in case assignments, in typical, challenging workplace situations.

51003 Academic Writing: Apprentice Level (Helsinki) (2 ECTS)

This online course teaches how to communicate ideas clearly in a written, academic format. More precisely, it introduces the essential theories, tools, and techniques for effective and efficient academic writing.

51004 Mastering Academic Writing (Helsinki) (3 ECTS)

The online course 51004 Mastering Academic Writing builds on the theories and practice introduced in the course 51003 Academic Writing: Apprentice Level. During the course, the students will be writing an integrative research paper, run in cooperation with subject departments at Hanken School of Economics.

The course focuses on presentations and discussions in business-related environments. The course is mandatory for Hanken Bachelor degree students in Vaasa.

51002-V Business Communication: Written (Vaasa) (3 ECTS)

The course focuses on written business messages, e.g., e-mails, letters and reports, and the use of appropriate structure, language, and level of formality according to internationally accepted writing conventions.

5150-V Intercultural Business Communication: Asia, the Arab world and Africa (Vaasa) (4 ECTS)

The course focuses on oral communication skills for doing business within Asia, the Arab World and Africa.

5151-V Intercultural Business Communication: Europe and the Americas (Vaasa) (4 ECTS)

The course focuses on oral communication skills for doing business within Europe and the Americas.

5159-V British Business Culture (Vaasa) (4 ECTS)

The course focuses on oral communication skills for doing business within Great Britain.
