Mikael Öhman is Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management & Social Responsibility at the Department of Marketing, Hanken School of Economics. Mikael joined Hanken from Aalto University, School of Science, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, where he did his doctoral research. Building on a foundation of pragmatism, Mikael has throughout his academic career worked closely with industry in various projects, seeking to advance theory through solving real world problems, and exploring real world opportunities.
In his doctoral research Mikael had a methodological focus on Design Science, which he successfully applied in different industry contexts. Mikael’s dissertation “Design science in operations management: Extracting knowledge from maturing designs” has received several awards, and included work that has (since) been published in leading academic journals such as Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Business Logistics, and International Journal of Production Economics.
Through Design science, Mikael’s research has focused on the potential of digital technologies in enabling new approaches to operations- and supply chain management. This has included studies in production planning and control, quality management, performance measurement, and procurement. Related to these, Mikael is also interested in performance-based contracting, and business analytics. In terms of industry contexts Mikael has experience in process industry, metals and machinery, automotive, construction, retail, and aviation. Mikael is also a subject matter expert in maintenance- and engineering asset management.
In terms of teaching, Mikael is experienced in designing and teaching both small and large classes. He is especially interested in game-based teaching, in connection to which he has also conducted pedagogical research.
