Hanken mourns the passing of Professor Denise Salin
Denise began her studies at Hanken in 1993 and graduated with a Master's degree four years later. In 2003, she earned her doctorate with a dissertation on workplace bullying, a topic she continued to study throughout her career.
Her research focused on the causes and consequences of workplace bullying, gender-related aspects of the phenomenon, and the role of HRM practices, leadership, and organisational structures in preventing and addressing bullying in working life.
Over the years, Denise became one of the most internationally cited scholars in her field. Her academic work attracted considerable international attention and has had a significant impact both within the research community and in working life. Through her publications, she helped to bring attention to the human and organisational consequences of destructive workplace behaviour and contributed to the knowledge on how organisations can create safer and more effective working environments.
In 2010, Denise was appointed associate professor, and in 2015 professor of management and organisation at Hanken. She was a highly valued and respected member of the Hanken community. Her deep knowledge of Hanken's history and processes, combined with her ability to present strong arguments and stand her ground in a firm yet courteous and friendly manner, enabled her to make important contributions to the development of teaching and research at Hanken, and particularly to the research and teaching environment at the Department of Management and Organisation. Working with Denise was always a true pleasure.
As a close colleague, Denise was greatly appreciated for her generosity and her commitment to the department and her colleagues. The door to her office was always open if someone needed advice, support or sympathy, but also a listening ear or a laugh. She was also a valued mentor to junior researchers and students, and a dedicated teacher who was highly appreciated as both a supervisor and lecturer. This commitment earned her the title of Teacher of the Year at Hanken during her career. At the Department of Management and Organisation, she will be profoundly missed in the everyday life of our academic community.
Colleagues, students and research partners in Finland and internationally remember Professor Denise Salin with great respect, warmth and gratitude. Her research, dedication and humanity will live on through the many people she inspired and the knowledge she leaves behind.
