Blog: What does effort mean to students?

When learning outcomes are assessed, the focus is often on performance rather than the learning process. In a blog post, Taija Townsend reflects on how students themselves perceive and experience effort in their studies.

Together with her colleagues Marisun Gajitos, Carola Wide, Ricardo Napoleão de Souza, and Pia Polsa, Townsend conducted a survey with 234 students. The findings show that effort is about more than just the time invested. It also involves engagement, perseverance, motivation, and taking personal responsibility for one's own learning.

The blog post raises important questions about whether higher education assessment systems adequately capture the processes through which learning actually takes place.
