Statistics
What is statistics?
Statistics is the science of learning from data. It is concerned with estimating models using economic and business data, for example, to gauge the strength of economic relationships. Statistics is also about comparing and assessing existing methods and models, and more importantly, about developing new methods and models. Statistics (including Mathematics) will help you in the studies of your major subject and it will facilitate the creation of new knowledge in your discipline!
Our research projects
Examples of current research projects in Statistics include applying Machine-Learning methods to business data, constructing co-movement measures for mixed-frequency asynchronous data, modelling conditional volatility of daily log-returns using a new GARCH-type model (ATV-GARCH, Additive Time-Varying GARCH), modelling ultra-high frequency trade durations with ACD-type (Autoregressive Conditional Duration) models.
Statistical Days 2026 (conference) is organized in collaboration with the Finnish Statistical Society at Hanken
