Hanken and MIT begin collaboration

Hanken and Massachusetts Institute of Technology begin collaboration within humanitarian logistics and innovations research.

The collaboration combines the programme MIT has developed for evaluating technological solutions in the developing world (MIT/CITE Comprehensive Initiative on Technology Evaluation) and the research in humanitarian logistics conducted at Hanken within the realm of the Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG Institute).

- Our hope is that these evaluations will support decision-makers to choose and develop the appropriate technology for humanitarian interventions and hence directly benefit people in need, says Gyöngyi Kovács, Erkko Professor in humanitarian logistics at Hanken.

As part of the collaboration the parties will focus on research within innovation in developing countries and the importance of supply chains and other non-technical aspects such as ease of use, affordable prices and environmental sustainability.

The first concrete project takes place within an evaluation of solar water pump systems used for irrigation in water-scarce regions, as well as provision of clean water in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
