Student Accommodation IN HELSINKI (HOAS)

Hanken's partner in providing accommodation is the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region (HOAS). Hoas provides a pool of furnished rooms for exchange students at universities and universities of applied sciences in the Helsinki region. The Hanken-Hoas agreement means that Hoas grants Hanken a quota of rooms/beds within the pool on an annual basis. Hoas will handle the placement of students. Hanken is not involved in the placement process and all your questions are to be answered on the Hoas website or you must contact Hoas directly.

Hanken will inform Hoas about accepted students in May (autumn and full year students) and November (spring students).

Please note that Hanken does not have enough Hoas student rooms for our exchange students arriving for the autumn semester due to the great number of students applying for the autumn semester. About 50% of the students arriving for the autumn semester will receive accommodation through HOAS.

Hoas will place the exchange students in houses at convenient location and distance to the university and with respect to local transportation. In handling the applications, "first come, first serve" rules. Additionally, Hanken reserves the rigt to give priority to overseas students.

All information on how to apply for a place and on the various types of housing and locations are found on the Hoas webpage.

Exchange students reserve a room from Hoas by the use of the electronic application form under EXCHANGE at www.hoas.fi . Click "How to apply for housing" to find the link to the application form aimed at exchange students ONLY. Please DO NOT fill in any other form.

We recommend you to apply for HOAS accommodation as soon as possible after you have been nominated for Hanken and the online application has been opened at www.hoas.fi on 1 April /1 October respectively. This is absolutely necessary for students applying for the autumn semester, when first come first served really matters.

Once your application has been received at Hoas, you will get an automatic reply

"Your application will be on hold until Hoas gets a checklist of incoming exchange students from your school in Finland or gets a confirmation of your student status from the school.
We start emailing housing reservations in June - July for autumn term and late November - December for spring term."

HOAS will send the room offer and request confirmation of the offer by a deadline that the applicant must meet to keep the right to the room. You confirm the room by paying the deposit and signing the tenancy agreement by the deadline HOAS will set in the offer.

HOAS keys upon arrival
If you ask for the pickup service in connection to uploading the Arrival data in Mobility-Online you are assisted by Hanken's exchange student tutors and they will pick you up at the airport/harbour/railway station. A tutor will take you to the apartment and will have the Hoas keys. The arrival dates with tutors' pickup service in Helsinki are during two days before the mandatory Orientation course. See the dates in the Academic calendar for exchange students.

Arrival for pickup and Orientation in Helsinki
In case you are not able to arrive during the pickup days you shall contact the International Office in Helsinki to agree on how to get the keys for your apartment and room.

We accept late arrival (not in time for the Orientation course) only if you have exams to take at home overlapping the Orientation course, or some severe personal hindrance.

Tenancy period
The Hoas student tenancy period is fixed, and runs from 1.9-31.12 (autumn semester), 1.1-31.5 (spring semester) or 1.9 -31.5 (full year). The dates of the agreement cannot be changed! Students must pay the rent until the expiring date indicated in the tenancy agreement even if they leave before the end of the semester or academic year. Although the Hoas agreement for students arriving in the autumn semester takes effect from 1.9 you will be able to move in into the apartments during the pickup days in August without paying rent. Note that there are some apartments into which you cannot move in until 1.9. Hoas will inform about these apartments on their web page and directly to the tenant.

HOAS Application form and "Start date" / "End date"
The application form on the web asks you to mark the Start date/End date of your stay. You should fill in your arrival date in August or January as the "Start date of exchange studies". In any case your agreement will start 1.9 or 1.1, so it is not extremely important to have the exact date the moment you apply. As the "End date of exchange studies" you shall fill in 31.12 or 31.05. Hanken informs Hoas about our semester dates. If needed (i.e. for examination) in June, students can stay for the additional days by arrangement with Hoas.

Housing options on the private market

  • Outgoing students' rooms or apartments
Hanken encourages our outgoing exchange students to let their accommodation while they are on exchange themselves. Students can both request and offer accommodation through Hanken Accommodation at http://accommodation.hanken.fi
Hanken alumni and other private landlords who want to offer rooms/apartments to exchange students are recommended to place their ads here as well.

  • Housing Anywhere

To encourage student-to-student rentals Hanken has joined  http://www.housinganywhere.com/. This is a platform where outgoing students can place their housing offers in a secure way to find incoming students looking for accommodation. Using the platform itself is free of charge; only when you make a concrete booking an administrative fee will be charged.

Other options in the private market

We need to stress that it takes time to find affordable accommodation on the open market in the Helsinki region. It will be easier if you find a flat mate and search together. A special Facebook group consisting of the exchange students of the semester in question will be set up some month prior to semester start.

Students Accommodation IN VAASA (VOAS)

Because the Vaasa Student Residence Foundation VOAS does not allow students to move in before 1 September unless they pay rent for the whole month of August, Hanken's Orientation days in Vaasa will start on 1 September at the earliest.

The Pickup service by the Vaasa tutors will be arranged accordingly, even during the weekend. You must book a hostel for the nights in August. The Voas keys are not accessible before 1.9 and not on Saturday -Sunday.

Students going to Hanken's Vaasa campus shall apply for a Voas room online directly at the Vaasa Student Residence Foundation Voas and handle all the practical matters with Voas. The Centre for Research and International Affairs or the Office of Study Affairs at the Vaasa campus are not involved in the reservation of your accommodation in Vaasa.

Complete information about student accommodation, services, flats and locations, and the application form is available on the Voas website at www.voas.fi. Once VOAS has filed your application for accommodation they will be in contact directly with you and send you an offer. You will be requested to confirm the offer by paying the deposit for the room. If needed, you should be in contact directly with VOAS in any matters concerning accommodation. Students arriving for the autumn semester shall not apply before 1 May to avoid that their application has to be renewed, as the application automatically expires after three months.

If you ask for the pickup service in connection to uploading the Arrival data in Mobility-Online you are assisted by Hanken's exchange student tutors and they will pick you up at the airport/railway station.
