The provision of one offer of admission per term

According to the national provision, a student may accept only one offer of admission leading to a higher education degree in Finland during one academic term (the academic terms are 1 August-31 December OR 1 January-31 July). This rule applies to all higher education, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, Licentiate and Doctoral programmes.

Hence, if you have already accepted an offer of admission from another university or university of applied sciences in Finland (whose studies start between 1 August and 31 December 2017), you cannot accept your offer of admission to Hanken. If you accept your offer of admission from Hanken, you cannot accept another offer of admission in Finland whose studies start during the aforementioned time period.

Deferment of admissions

You can only postpone the commencement of your studies if you have one of the following legal grounds for your absence:

  1. Service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women's Voluntary Military Service (194/1995)
  2. Maternity, paternity or parental leave
  3. Being incapacitated by personal illness or injury

No other reasons for deferment of admissions are accepted.

In order to postpone the commencement of your studies with a year, you must first confirm your offer and submit the eletronic confirmation form before 31 March 2018 at 3 p.m. local time. On the confirmation form, mark that you will be absent during the academic year 2018-2019.

Should the legal grounds for your absence only apply to the second academic term (e.g. military service or maternity leave beginning in January), you may register as absent for the entire academic year if you wish. You may also change the status of your registration for the spring term from ‘attending’ to ‘absent’ during the spring term registration period.

For such absences, an official certificate of the legal reason for absence must be presented to the university.

Documents proving the legal grounds for absence:

1) Service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women's Voluntary Military Service (194/1995):

  • Document required: Call-up order

2) Maternity, paternity or parental leave:

  • Document required:
    • Kela's certificate regarding maternity, paternity, or parental allowance period or, if the certificate has not yet been received, a medical certificate regarding the pregnancy
      OR
    • Corresponding certificates from the authorities of another country regarding statutory parental leave

3) Being incapacitated by personal illness or injury:

  • Document required: Sickness allowance decision or, if no decision exists, a medical certificate. The medical certificate must state which illness or injury the student suffers from, and that this condition prevents the student from beginning their studies during autumn 2018

Deadline for delivering the documents attesting your legal reason for registering as absent: 31 August 2018, but it is recommended that you deliver the documents as soon as possible to masters@hanken.fi

The documents must be submitted in Finnish, Swedish or English.

Please note that even if you postpone the commencement of your studies due to one of the aforementioned legal reasons, you must submit the eletronic confirmation form by 31 March 2018 in order to ensure your right to study at Hanken.

Please note that we strongly recommend that you begin your studies in August 2018, since we cannot guarantee that the programme structure is the same in the future.
