Types of Grants

The grant types are as follows:

A. Research

  • Grants for conference and course participation abroad.
  • Grants for research terms and research projects for senior researchers (in funding decisions priority is given to projects including a research visit abroad.
  • Grants for other research purposes (e.g. gathering of data).

Tenured Hanken academic staff as well as long-term substitutes may apply for grants for research. Please see the current call for more info. 

The maximum amount for conference and course trips within Europe is 1100 euros and for trips outside Europe 2200 euros. The Hanken Funds do not fund participation in conferences and courses taking place in Finland.

Grants for research terms and full-time research require a leave of absence from another position. Furthermore, other grants should not have been received for the same purpose. The monthly amount is decided upon in connection with the grant decision.

B. Doctoral education

  • Grants for conferences, courses, tutorials or colloquiums abroad.
  • Grants for research stays at a foreign university or research institute.
  • Grants for other purposes within doctoral studies at Hanken (e.g. gathering of data).

Doctoral students admitted to the Hanken PhD Programme and who are registered as present for the academic year may apply for the grants related to doctoral education. Please see the current call for more info. 

The maximum amount for conference and course trips within Europe is 1100 euros and for trips outside Europe 2200 euros. The Hanken Funds do not fund participation in conferences and courses taking place in Finland.

C. Language courses and summer schools

  • Grants for language courses in so called Schuster countries can be applied for by students on BSc and MSc level at Hanken, as well as alumni students who have graduated from Hanken within the past three years.
  • Grants for Summer Schools in so called Schuster countries can only be applied for by students on BSc and MSc level at Hanken.

The so-called Schuster grants are intended for language studies in German, Spanish or Portuguese in countries where the language in question is generally spoken (Germany, Austria, German-speaking part of Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Central or South America) or for Summer Schools in one of these countries. In applications for the Schuster grants, specified maximum amounts are used (see the information on the Elisabeth Schuster fund).

Please note that the Hanken Funds can only fund language courses and Summer Schools for BSc and MSc students in the countries mentioned above. Students aiming at studying in other countries are encouraged to apply for funding from external funds.

D. Further education

  • Grants for further pedagogical studies.
  • Grants for further professional education.

E. Development of teaching

  • Grants for development of teaching material (e.g. textbooks).
  • Grants for development of teaching methods.

F. Other purposes

  • In exceptional cases, grants may also be awarded for other purposes, e.g. for the purchase of literature (please note that both the purchase and the literature are administered by the library).
