To ease everyday life, we recommend all students open a bank account in Finland immediately after arrival. The account types offered for daily banking by different banks do not differ significantly in terms of features or service charges.
In the beginning of term, the Student Association for all Master's degree student, the Masters' Committee, will help you with the process of opening a bank account. You will need a passport, visa, or residence permit, your Finnish personal identity code, and the certificate of enrollment that you will receive during the Orientation Day. Most shops, restaurants, etc., accept bank cards/credit cards as method of payment. The major credit cards (Visa, Eurocard, Access, MasterCard, Diner's Club, and American Express) are accepted throughout the country. Automatic cash points (ATMs) accept credit cards.
The currency used in Finland is the Euro (€, EURO). Money can be exchanged at most banks in Finland and at many currency exchange offices in larger cities. Please consult your own bank on how to best handle your money transactions while in Finland. It is advisable to bring cash with you to cover the first weeks' expenses before you open a bank account.
