THE MASTER'S PROGRAMMES AVAILABLE IN HELSINKI:

1. Marketing as a major in the Master's programme

The Master's programme in Marketing (in Swedish) is a two-year Master's programme that is available in Helsinki. It comprises 120 ECTS.

The marketing major studies focus on the role of marketing in organizations and how marketing can be used as a strategic tool and an instrument for competing in markets. The programme gives the student the skills, tools, and models for working in responsible and leading positions in companies. The studies offer knowledge of analysing markets, evaluating marketing strategies and outcomes, and using marketing as a tool in competition.

The programme is suitable for you who:

  • Have a genuine interest in marketing and various marketing activities, like product and service innovations, strategic brand management, and different business models.
  • Want deeper understanding and skills regarding marketing's strategic importance for companies.
  • Are interested in customer behaviour and customer relationships as a driving force for the profitability of a company – how one builds and maintains business relations with customers and meets the customers’ needs and goals.

 

As a student in Master's programme (in Swedish) you follow the Master's study plan for the intergrated Bachelor's and Master's programme and you can choose from a wide selection of courses to include in your Master's degree. The programme has a three-part structure:

  • 90 ECTS are dedicated to programme-tied studies where you immerse yourself in the subject marketing. These studies include research methods and a thesis.
  • A minimum of one language course (6 ECTS) is included in the programme.
  • The remaining 24 ECTS can be chosen freely from the wide selection of courses that Hanken in Helsinki has to offer.

2. Marketing as an orientation (track) in the Master's programme Business and Management (English)

Business and Management is a two-year Master's programme in English which is available in Helsinki and which covers 120 ECTS.

Within the programme, you can specialize in one of three orientations (”tracks”), one of which is marketing:

  • Marketing
  • Humanitarian logistics or
  • International strategy and sustainability

MASTER'S PROGRAMMES AVAILABLE IN VAASA

 

1. Marketing as a major in the Master's programme

Marketing (Strategic marketing management) is a two-year Master's programme in Swedish that is available in Vaasa. It covers 120 ECTS.

 

The goal of the programme is to give students a competence to lead market oriented companies and organizations that operate in markets characterized by fast development, continuous changes, and complex structures. Understanding of strategic marketing activities -- like effective branding, business intelligence, and marketing communication -- are of crucial importance in such business environments.

The programme follows the same study plan as the Master's studies in the integrated Bachelor's and Master's programme which has three parts:

  • 90 ECTS are dedicated to programme-tied studies in which the student is immersed in the subject Marketing. These studies include studies on research methods and a Master’s thesis.
  • A minimum of one language course (6 ECTS) is included in the programme.
  • The remaining 24 ECTS can be chosen freely from the wide selection of courses that Hanken in Vaasa has to offer.

2. Marketing as an orientation (track) in the Master's programme General Management (English)

General Management is a two-year Master's programme in English offered in Vaasa  comprising 120 ECTS.

Within the programme, you can specialize in one of three focus areas:

  • Marketing, business management and entrepreneurship
  • Accounting and trade law
  • Financing

3. Marketing study module in Business, Trade and Service

Business, Trade and Service is a study module of 31-36 ECTS. It can be taken by those Vaasa Master's programme students who have marketing as a major. The study unit is given in cooperation with the University of Vaasa.

 

Goals:
The study module Business, Trade and Service gives you an understanding of how to manage trade and service-based organizations that operate in a modern, dynamic marketing environment. As a student in this study module, you will get on the one hand, a solid knowledge of the theoretical marketing models that can be practised in the trade and service branch. On the other hand, you have the opportunity to develop practical skills in dealing with marketing challenges in the trade and service marketing field, and you will acquire abilities of operating interactively in a multilingual trade and service environment.

 

After finishing your studies you will be a specialist in retail business in Finland.


A maximum on 10 students per year are admitted in the study unit from the Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa and 10 students from the University of Vaasa. The study periods in Swedish are arranged by Hanken and the periods in Finnish by the University of Vaasa, according to each university's course requirements and each unit's timetables for the study periods. The course ”Challenges in retailing management” is arranged together by Hanken and the University of Vaasa and in it, the student has the opportunity to work in either bi- or multilingual teams and has thereby the opportunity to develop one's language skills.

 

Practical information:

  • The study module can be taken as a part of the Master's studies. The courses given by Hanken in the study module can be taken as subject studies and the courses given by the University of Vaasa can be taken as a part of optional studies.
  • The languages of the courses are Swedish, Finnish and English. It is required that the students can manage taking the courses in each language to carry through the studies.
  • The study unit can be taken any time during the Master's studies.

  • The courses give different amounts of ECTS. Because of this, the study module’s ECTS have been set at 31-36 ECTS.
