Department of Economics
Welcome to the Department of Economics
The Department of Economics at Hanken School of Economics is well integrated into the academic world internationally as well as nationally. The department is one of the partners of the consortium Helsinki Center of Economic Research (HECER), with over a 100 economics researchers under the roof of the Economicum-building, together with the other academic departments of economics in Helsinki, namely Aalto University and University of Helsinki. HECER facilitates close cooperation in economics between these three universities both in research and teaching. The center is located right in the city centre. Together we run 7 seminar series in various fields of economics on a weekly basis. Speakers come from top departments in Europe and US.
The Department of Economics is also part of the Helsinki GSE initiative. Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE) is an academic initiative bringing together three Finnish universities – Aalto University, Hanken School of Economics, and University of Helsinki. Our mission is to produce outstanding research with maximum academic and social impact, to educate the next generation of world-class economists, and to offer excellent training across disciplinary borders. Helsinki GSE collaborates closely with VATT Institute for Economic Research. The three partnering universities are developing the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE) with the intention of increasing the number of economics faculty significantly within the coming 5 years.
We offer a wide range of courses on bachelor's and master's level emphasising general perspectives and strategic thinking - skills highly appreciated in the business community.
Together with the other partners within Helsinki GSE we also offer a comprehensive curriculum of courses on master's level in English. The studies are designed to meet high international standards comparable with programmes in Economics offered at other leading business schools. Majoring in Economics gives a solid basis for continuing with PhD studies.
The Hanken PhD Programme also offers the possibility to major in Economics. The course work is mainly conducted within the framework of Helsinki GSE and it is designed to provide doctoral students with the skills required of academic and professional economists. Helsinki GSE is the hub of the PhD education in Finland and students from all across the country come to attend the economics PhD courses here. Read more about applying to the Hanken PhD Programme.
Graduates and doctors who have majored in Economics have performed prominently well in a wide spectrum of careers that require economic expertise and analytical skills. Examples include careers as expert economists, analysts, specialists and consultants in private firms in industry, in the financial sector, in research institutes, in public administration and in international organisations.
The faculty at the Department of Economics at Hanken School of Economics is closely connected to the international research community. We have a high-quality publication record (including top-5 journals and FT 50 journals in economics) and we are extensively involved in scientific expert assignments, for example for international journals. We also have extensive experience outside academia through prominent assignments in the private as well as the public sector. Our research is focused in particular on industrial economics, competition economics, financial economics, labour economics, behavioural economics and experimental economics.
