Swedish

Welcome to the Swedish department's pages

Hanken's task is to educate the economists who will work for Finnish industry and society, both at home and abroad. This requires proficiency in both of the country's official languages. Students who have studied in the Swedish language at Hanken should have the skills necessary to communicate both orally and in writing in Swedish and in Finnish. The Swedish department's task is to assure that students can argue their case, make presentations, and write business letters and reports, etc. in good Swedish. This applies to students with either Swedish or Finnish as their native language. The courses taught by Hanken are intended to provide students with the education and training they will need in their future career.

Swedish as a Foreign Language

Swedish as a foreign language is a Swedish beginners' course at the A2-B1 level within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The aim of the course is for students to learn to speak Swedish in preparation for their exchange year at Hanken.

All teaching materials are on-line (WebCT). These are supported and reinforced by contact hours (2-4 hours a week) and by homework submitted via e-mail. In addition, students are expected to participate once a week in chat room discussions on-line. Video conferencing is also available to augment the learning process.

During 2001-2004 the Swedish course was an E.U. Socrates funded project ( Brochure for A Distance Learning Course on the Internet [pdf] 416k). The aims of the project was to develop a multi-modal language course concept, and to increase knowledge of a lesser-spoken European language. Moreover, the project strove to foster Nordic-Baltic co-operation, as both regions have historical and cultural links through the Swedish language.

The course has received financial support from Kulturfonden (the Swedish Cultural Foundation) and the European Label quality award was granted in 2001.

The aim of the project is to integrate quality management into online teaching by developing a quality manual for web-based language courses. A report was published in Spring 2007.

In 2008 started the Swedish-Russian project in conjunction with Saint-Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance.
