JOO studies
JOO-studier
All Finnish universities are signatories to an agreement whereby both undergraduate and postgraduate students are permitted to apply to take courses at other Finnish universities, provided that those courses are approved options within the student's degree program. This agreement is known as the JOO Agreement (a Finnish acronym for 'Flexible Study Rights' agreement) .
Hanken students wishing to apply to take courses through the JOO-agreements should fill in the appropriate application form and hand it in to the Office of Study Affairs. An email will be sent to the student informing them whether their application has been approved or not. If the application is approved, the Office of Study Affairs will forward it to the other university.
Through the JOO Agreement students can take courses not available at their home university and thereby extend their degree. JOO-courses should be relevant to the student's degree and need to be included within the 160 credits/300 ECTS' limit
Students should make a study plan which outlines the minor studies they would like to include through the JOO Agreement.Students should refer to www.joopas.fi to make sure they are aware of closing dates at different universities. For example, the deadline at HKKK for autumn's courses is in April, and in October for the spring's courses
Students will find the application form, deadlines for application at other universities and those universities' instructions at www.joopas.fi. Students will also find Hanken's instructions and how they should apply to take courses at other universities within the JOO Agreement.
- Approval for language studies
Hanken students can study several languages but the courses that are necessary for a degree in more than one foreign language should normally be taught at Hanken. Students planning to go on an exchange through Hanken to a country whose language is not taught at Hanken students can apply through the JOO-agreement to study that language at another university. - Approval for major studies
First, students should take the courses offered at Hanken within their major subject. Sometimes alternative courses which could be taken at other universities are listed in the study handbook. Students are permitted to take these courses through the JOO-agreement. - Approval for minor studies and electivesThe principal aim of the JOO-agreement is to extend students' options to take minor subjects. A student's minor shouldusually reflect the student's interests and be congruent with the degree. For minor studies to be approved, there must be a comprehensive picture that corresponds with the scope of minor studies at Hanken
Enquiries should be directed to Ava Engström at the Office of Study Affairs. She will help with questions concerning the JOO-agreement and assist students in creating a study plan. The study plan should be submitted before the JOO application can be evaluated to ensure, that those courses can be included within their degree.
