Mål
The aim of the course is to discuss actual policy issues in technology law. Topics include the legal and economic foundations of software industry, the philosophy of free software and related ideas, the new threats to the media industry as well as the role of privacy in the age of the war on terror. The course introduces students to the international policy discussion on the future of the information society from regulatory viewpoint. Critical thinking is especially emphasized: one can find counterarguments to every "guru" around.

Förkunskaper
This course is provided by the Institute of Software Business and Engineering at Helsinki University of Technology. It is also part of the Master's Program in Intellectual Property Law at Hanken. Other students are welcome. A basic course in intellectual property or commercial law is required to enter the course.

Written examination (80 % of the grade), which is based on the literature (including lectures), and a case note paper (20 % of the grade).

The students are also expected to learn the contents of lecture notes. The lecture notes will be made available during the course on the website of the course.
The course earns 6 credits at Helsinki University of Technology. With additional work, Hanken students in the Master's Program in Intellectual Property Law can earn 8 credits.
