Wilhelm Barner-Rasmussen

Hanken School of Economics

Wilhelm Barner-Rasmussen currently holds the Hanken Foundation assistant professorship in management and organisation, one of the first tenure track positions in Finland.

He has held a number of teaching and research positions at Hanken since 1999 and has twice been a visiting scholar at the Scandinavian Consortium for Organizational Research at Stanford University, CA.

His work experience also includes the academic directorship of Hanken & SSE Executive Education (www.hankensse.fi) and the planning and delivery of several tailored executive education programmes.

Teaching

Barner-Rasmussen is the director of the Master's degree programme in International Management, MIM (http://www.hanken.fi/public/en/mim_homepage). He also runs the Swedish- and English-language research seminar courses at the Department of Management and Organization.

He has planned and taught courses in management and organisation at basic, intermediate and advanced levels at Hanken since 1999. He has also taught on Hanken's executive MBA programme and at the Aalto School of Economics (formerly Helsinki School of Economics, HSE), where he is an adjunct professor (docent) in International Business since 2007. He has also contributed to doctoral courses at both Hanken and the HSE, and supervised more than 50 Master's theses.

In 2006, he completed the International Teachers' Program at IMD, Lausanne.

 

Research Interest

Barner-Rasmussen defended his PhD in 2003 and has since pursued an active research career, with gratefully acknowledged financial support by a number of foundations including the Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation, the Foundation for Economic Education, the Foundation of the Helsinki School of Economics, the Hanken Foundation, the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, and the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.

Barner-Rasmussen's current academic interests focus on knowledge transfer in multinationals, specifically issues related to language, communication, the role of individuals in interunit relationships, and location of headquarters units.

His recent research include co-editing a special issue on ‘New perspectives on International Management Research’ in Scandinavian Journal of Management (together with Ingmar Björkman and Eero Vaara), and acting as the co-convenor of a subtheme on ‘Englishization and language diversity in contemporary organizational life’ at the 2010 annual colloquium of the European Group of Organisation Studies, EGOS (together with Rebecca Piekkari and Chris Steyaert).

In 2009, Barner-Rasmussen acted as the main organiser (together with Rebecca Piekkari and Chris Steyaert) of an international workshop on ‘Language and multilingualism in management’ at Hanken School of Economics. The workshop was supported by the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) of Great Britain.

Barner-Rasmussen is a member of the Board of the Nordic Academy of Management since 2007.
