The Role of Boards and Management Teams in Maximizing Value Creation and Innovation

Summary

Despite of the emerging new approaches to innovation and value creation, we still lack knowledge about what is the role of management team and board in value creation and innovation within a firm. In the project value creation throughout the whole corporate value chain is studied. The following two broad sets of research questions are addressed:

1. Making sense of the role of management teams and boards for innovation development in firms of different sizes: How and when do firms succeed in managing their innovation activities? How innovative activities create value? What is the role of the management team? What is the role of the board?

2. Making sense of how the management teams and boards can maximize value creation and growth of innovations in firms of different sizes. How to maximize the value creation through innovations? What is the role of the management team? What is the role of the board? How are boards in reality working to foster and manage value creation and innovation?

In the research project both quantitative surveys and qualitative case studies will be used. The project holds several important contributions. First, the project develops best practices for large and small/medium size corporations for managing their innovations. Second, the project will develop managerial recommendations on how innovations should be managed especially from boards and management teams' point of view.
