Hanken School of Economics 100 Years of Future
Hanken's origins date back to 1909, when it was founded by members of the local business community "as the most advanced educational institution in Finland with instruction in the Swedish language". Today Hanken is the only independent business school of university standing in Finland, all the other business schools being part of bigger universities. The right to award doctoral degrees was acquired in 1944. As Finland's Swedish-speakers live in coastal areas, the School operates in Helsinki and Vaasa. A substantial portion of Finland's business is located in the Helsinki area, in particular services and finance. In Vaasa, export industry predominates. Ostrobothnia, the region around Vaasa, is the most industrialised region in Finland. The Vaasa area is also home of the largest energy technology cluster in the Nordic countries.
