The Subject Management and Organisation

How do companies function in today's turbulent environment? How can their ways of functioning be developed? These are central issues within the subject of Management and Organisation.

Today, a strong vision and a viable competitive strategy is a basic requirement for business success. Courses in management and international business therefore constitute an important part of this subject's curriculum. Another central tenet within the subject is that a firm's employees should be seen as one of its major strategic resources. The management and development of competences - both individual and collective - accordingly emerges as a central element in the instruction provided by the Department. Finally, the courses within the subject reflect the Department's conviction that a good understanding of individual and group behaviour in organisations is imperative for managerial success in tomorrow's business world.

The Subject Entrepreneurship and Management

Studies in Entrepreneurship and Management are an exciting expedition, focusing explicitly on the small company and the challenges and opportunities it offers.

The expedition is an end in itself, guided by the following three principles:

  1. Starting your own business after completing your studies in Entrepreneurship and Management is not mandatory. Should you decide to go for it, however, excellent support is available: the department is one of the co-organisers of the international business plan competition Venture Cup.
  2. Among the most important aspects within the major Entrepreneurship and Management are capacities for holistic thinking and resource combination, aiming at the creation of new innovative solutions. Since we live as we teach, a student's degree is underpinned by Hanken's broad selection of courses.
  3. We strongly believe in the small company and its capability to expand. That, if anything, is the core of the courses we offer: 'Tillväxtföretaget' and 'Entrepreneurship, Theory and Practice'.

The Subject Information Systems Science

Our students learn how to plan, procure and implement IT-systems as well as to understand how these are utilised both operationally and strategically in companies. The different elements of this subject are:

Personal computing. All business students need basic knowledge in personal computing, including how computers and networks function as well as skills in the most common tools such as word processing, spreadsheet calculations, email and and Internet software.

Management information systems. This subject extends the perspective from the individual to how organisations can utilise IT for internal and external (customers, partners) communications and information systems. Subject areas such as marketing, e-commerce, communication in virtual teams, IT-strategies are also covered.

Systems development and programming. This area covers the planning and programming of IT-systems, including modern object-oriented methods. In particular, database techniques and Java programming are taught.

The Subject Politics and Business

Politics and Business specializes in the interaction between political and economic phenomena in society. The Swedish name of the subject, which includes the word 'economic' (Ekonomisk politologi), suggests Political Economy. Politics and Business at the school differs from Political Economy proper in that it is less connected with classical economics.

This is accomplished in a stimulating research climate with inspiring research and a history of successful postgraduate training.

The importance of international collaboration in all areas of activity is emphasised. Publishing high-quality research in leading international journals and publishing houses is a high priority. Active efforts have also been made to attract visiting scholars, with good results.

Doctoral Programme in the Department of Management and Organisation

Department of Management and Organisation has an ambitious doctoral studies programme that aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of their own research area, the ability to apply research methods, and the ability to create new scholarly knowledge. The focus of the programme is to prepare the graduates for a career as researchers.

Doctoral studies in the Department of Management and Organisation includes a wide and challenging course programme which consists of three elements: 1) 30 ECTS courses taught at Hanken, 2) courses offered by the Finnish graduate school in business studies ( KATAJA), and 3) courses offered by three comprehensive international doctoral programs, in each of which Management and Organisation is the only Finnish participating business school unit:

  • The Nordic Research School in International Business ( NORD-IB), a 30 ECTS programme offered collectively by the Aarhus Business School, the Copenhagen Business School, Hanken, the Norwegian School of Management, the Stockholm School of Economics, and Uppsala University.
  • The European Doctoral School in Knowledge and Management ( EUDOKMA), an extensive programme consisting of intensive on-site courses offered by a network of European universities.
  • The Nordic Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Research, which offers a range of courses taught in the different Nordic countries

The research focus of Management and Organisation at Hanken is on management and human resources in globalising business organisations, reflecting the double processes of the globalising of and by business organisations; however, other organisations and the increasing interconnections of business and non-business organisations are also within the scope of study. The research focus is international and interdisciplinary, across organisation theory, organisation behaviour, international management, human resource management, knowledge management, strategy, gender studies, transnational studies, critical management studies, and the social sciences more generally. Management and Organisation currently has the following central research programmes:

I. Industrial restructuring in globalising organisations: Uncovering the cultural and political dynamics of international mergers and acquisitions;

II. Knowledge in globalising organisations: Explanatory mechanisms, measurements and performance implications;

III. Human Resource Management and employee wellbeing in globalising organisations: the role of the HR function, HRM practices, employee outcomes, and firm performance;

IV. Gender and diversity in globalising organisations: transnational management, policies and organising.

The doctoral programme includes also a student mentoring system, a PhD programme development committee consisting of professors and doctoral students that meets regularly, and extensive guidelines for the students. Furthermore, the students are strongly encouraged to spend at least one term as visiting student at foreign universities. Hanken is, for example, a member of the Scandinavian Consortium for Organisational Research at Stanford University that offers Hanken's PhD students a possibility to study at Stanford, California.
