Background of the workshop

Background of the workshop

The demand for a workshop on language and multilingualism in management has grown along with the research interest in the topic. In June 2008, Chris Steyaert arranged a smaller gathering on this theme in St Gallen. Rebecca Piekkari and Wille Barner-Rasmussen were among the participants. We then agreed to arrange a bigger event as soon as possible.

The location was not difficult to find. Finland is a bilingual country, Hanken School of Economics is a business school where language plays an important role - and besides, one that turns 100 years in 2009.

In September 2008, invitations were sent out to scholars we knew were active in the area. We got an instant and encouraging response, several colleagues signing up within hours of receiving the invitation. Some 30 persons have now indicated they will participate in the workshop, which is quite ideal for the informal type of gathering we have in mind.

The workshop is offered free of charge thanks to financial contributions by Hanken School of Economics and the Economic and Social Research Council of the United Kingdom (seminar series: Language, Communication and Knowledge in International Business and Management). We thank our sponsors for making this possible.

Welcome to Helsinki!

You can participate in multiple ways

You can participate in the workshop in several ways:

Presenting a written piece of work

If you want to present a written piece of work - be it a full paper or a research note - you are warmly encouraged to do so. In that case, kindly notify wilhelm.barner-rasmussen at hanken.fi if you have not already done so, and do remember to submit an abstract/summary of max 100 words by January 15, 2009. Full papers, where applicable, are due by May 1.

Participating as a discussant

We would like some participants to act as discussants of the papers to be presented. You are most welcome to volunteer to act as discussant of one or several paper - in that case, please notify wilhelm.barner-rasmussen at hanken.fi as soon as possible. Discussants will receive the relevant papers well ahead of the workshop.

Participating as a listener

You are also very welcome to participate in the workshop simply by listening to the presentations and participating actively in the subsequent discussions. We aim for an informal atmosphere where ideas are shared and exchanged as freely and creatively as possible across theoretical and disciplinary boundaries.
