The objective of the course is to provide students with an understanding of organizational theory by the use of contrasting metaphors and novel perspectives. Students are expected to learn to read different situations in organizations. The students will learn how to apply different analytical tools for managing organizational problems.

Learning Objectives

This course aims at training students to learn how to critically analyze, identify and foremost communicate issues of an organization by using various metaphors.

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

• Define, structure and address consequences of a problem within the organizational theory by using a metaphor.
• Critically reflect upon a text and relate these into practically “real life” relevant situations.
• Explain and motivate points of reference and methods.
• Demonstrate accuracy in academic writing and communication through the use of metaphors.
• Demonstrate a balance of critical and social distance to own and others work. Show respect by being on time, being prepared, demonstrating listening skills and offering constructive comments/responses to upcoming issues.
• Position organizational issues by applying ethical reasoning which conform to standard of codes of practice in the context in which the problem appear.
• Conduct and defend decisions with a sound social and cultural understanding towards various societal situations/contexts.

Instruction

- 20 lectures/seminars based upon compulsory and active attendance including required readings.
- Six seminars including separate written reports and a prepared oral pitch. Each seminar includes a unique case and unique metaphor. Attendance in these seminars will require students to actively reflect upon their own and others work.
- Students are required to prepare and hand in a report and presentation.
- Works during seminars are normally conducted in pairs of two students. Contact hours are offered by appointment to each group of students.

Images of Organization by Gareth Morgan, 2006. Sage Publications. ISBN 978-1-4129-3979-9 (pbk). Readings from this book will be identified as “Images” in the course schedule.
Additional literature can be chosen by the student, in consultation with the supervisor.

Evaluation and Examination

Active participation in class, written weekly reports and a final report.
