Applicants Holding a non-Finnish Master's Degree

A student may apply for admission to doctoral studies if his or her Master's degree can be proved to be equivalent to a Finnish Master's degree comprising 300 credits (160 credit units). In addition, the applicant's previous studies in business economics and economics, as well as the prior requirements for the intended major, will be examined based on the following:

The minimum requirements for applicants for studies towards the Doctor of Philosophy in Economics degree are that the applicant must have completed studies equivalent to

  • 36 credits in business economics and
  • 6 credits in economics

In addition, the applicant must have completed

  • at least 27 credits at intermediate level and
  • at least 18 credits at advanced level in the intended major

In addition, the Degree Supervisor may stipulate that other courses in the intended major must be completed before the applicant can be admitted as a doctoral student.

If at the time of application a student does not satisfy the minimum requirements in business economics or economics and/or does not possess sufficient knowledge in the intended major, he or she may be required to supplement his or her studies in order to be granted the right to study. See information on the supplementary studies procedure below.

An applicant who does not meet the requirements on studies in business economics and economics can be accepted as a student for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, provided that the research area fits within a major offered at the university. The requirements above concerning the intended major apply.
