Modified Borrowing Rules
Vaasa staff use Tritonia and should see their rules.
In Helsinki, staff may keep books from the main collection for up to one year if no one makes a reservation (otherwise 30 days). For course books, the duration is the standard 7 days.
Staff also get free interlibrary loans and late returns do not accrue fines.
Purchasing course books
All books used as course literature should be approved at the same time as the course descriptions. After approval in the Academic Council the course literature can only be supplemented with articles and other material available on the Internet. Course books changed or added after the deadline must be financed by the departments.
Note that copies of fulltext articles available in the databases provided by the library MAY NOT be uploaded into Studybuilder and made available in pdf-format on the course site. Instructions for how to make links into the databases are available on the library's homepage.
A new license for digital copies makes it possible to scan book chapters (max. 20 pages) and journal articles, using the print edition as the original source.
In Helsinki the library strives to acquire one course book per five attendees, but not more than 25 copies. The course literature is bought according to the information given in Studybuilder in May. Books used on language and literature courses are bought in only two copies. Remember to inform the library about new courses and courses moving from one period to another as soon as the decision is made by the department council. E-books are acquired as complement. Send an e-mail to books@hanken.fi or contact Anne Granberg (33 398) if you want to check if a certain book is available as an e-book with a site license, or if you have any questions concerning course literature when you are planning your course.

Also use electronic books
At Hanken, several databases containing e-books are available. Our proxy server makes it possible for students to use these databases even when not physically at Hanken. Students must follow the rules set by each publisher.
Search ebooks directly in the ebook collections listed on this site. Most of the ebooks are also found via Nelli. Ebooks from Ebrary are cataloged in the library catalog Hanna.

Links to articles and ebooks
License agreements with database suppliers usually don't permit redistribution. This means that putting copies directly in Studybuilder is not allowed, even if password protected. Link to the original source instead, using Hanken's proxy server when accessing restricted content:

Digital copies used in teaching
Digital copies (i.e. scanned articles or book chapters) have to pass a licencing process in order to be used as legal copies in courses and distributed to students. The licence is based on an agreement with the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish copyright organization Kopiosto.
The licence allows you to scan and distribute
- scholarly articles from the printed original journal, or
- 20 pages (or maximum 20 %) of a printed book.
The digital copies have to be reported to Kopiosto in order to be labelled with an electronic licence. You can do this process yourself at Kopiosto's web service (information only in Finnish and Swedish). Alternatively you can have the library to do it. The labelled copies should be distributed in a closed VLE (i.e. Moodle or Studybuilder), and must be removed at the end of the academic year.
To use the library's services you should:
- Scan and save each source (article or chapter) as a separate pdf-file.
- Send the pdf-file(s) to infoservice@hanken.fi and in the e-mail add a) bibliographical information of the source b) estimated number of students on your course (this is information asked for by Kopiosto).
The library reports to Kopiosto and sends the labelled copies back to your e-mail. You upload the files to a VLE yourself.

Training in information literacy
The Library offers information literacy training, supporting teaching and research. This includes:
- courses on information retrieval, integrated with standard courses
- independent courses on various relevant topics
- individual guidance

Publishing at Hanken
The library supports scholarly publishing by maintaining Hanken's institutional repository DHanken and the research register Haris. DHanken contains e.g. doctoral theses, research reports, working papers and parallell published articles. More information on the publishing services is found on Publishing. Open educational resources - OER
Open educational resources (OER) are digital learning objects that are freely available for teaching use. Examples include text, video, books, lectures and even entire courses.
