Can I renew my loans via the Internet?
- Open HANNA
- Click "Patron"
- Enter your barcode (from the reverse side of your library card), PIN-code and surname.
The temporary PIN-code is 668800. Please change the temporary PIN-code immediately. This can be done on the patron information screen. - Mark the books which you wish to renew . Click "renew".
You are not allowed to extend your loan if:
- the book already has been extended ten times
- you owe 10 euros or more in fees and fines
- the book has been requested by another patron - Stop your session by clicking "Logout".
You can also see your reservations and possible fees. You can cancel a reservation. For the present, reservations can be made only at the library.
Why can't I renew my loans?
You cannot renew a book if it has been reserved by another customer, or if you have already renewed the book 10 times, or if you owe 10 € or more in fines.
What should I do if I have forgotten my PIN?
You can only change a forgotten PIN at the circulation desk.
Do I have to notify changes of address separately to the library?
Yes, you have to do that at the circulation desk. Address changes in Oodi are not automatically transferred to the library's system.
Is it possible to reserve reading room copies?
You can reserve books from the reading room for weekend loan. Write your name and the date of the weekend on the paper on the book's back cover. However it is not possible to reserve reading room books for over night loan.
What should I do if I need to borrow a book from the University of Lapland?
Contact the circulation desk or InfoBITen and make an Interlibrary loan request. Books from libraries in the Helsinki area cannot be requested as inter library loans, e.g. books from the library of the Helsinki University of Technology in Otaniemi. Please note that interlibrary loans are subject to charge, except for students writing their Master's thesis at Hanken.
What is the Nelli-portal?
The Nelli-portal is a portal for seeking information. Nelli presents all databases available at Hanken and makes it possible to search multiple databases at once. Read more about the Nelli-portal in our User Guide [pdf] 98k.
What is SFX?
The user can see an SFX icon in most of the databases and in the Nelli-portal. This icon helps the user to reach the article or book in question. By clicking on the icon, an SFX-menu opens. The links in the SFX-menu takes the user straight to the electronic version (full text) or to the holdings in HANNA or LINDA. More information in our User Guide [pdf] 98k.
Can I use the databases from my computer at home?
Yes. A proxy server makes it possible for staff and students at Hanken to search the databases remotely. By reaching the databases via the links on the Libray page, the user is directed via the proxy server and if the Hanken username is needed, the user is asked to use it.
How can I access fulltext journals held outside Hanken?
Users should go to the list of Electronic journals via the link on the page Journals, The user will then be directed via the proxy server and if the Hanken username is needed, the user is asked to provide it.
How can I check if a full text version of a journal is available at Hanken?
In the left-hand frame of the library's home page there is a link called Journals. On top of the Journals page there is a link to Electronic journals. A particular journal can be reached as follows:
- Write the journal title or parts of it, into the search box. Use a question mark (?) to truncate words and choose:
- Starts with: if the word(s) corresponds to the beginning of the title.
- Contains: if the word(s) corresponds to word(s) in the title.
- Exact: if the word(s) corresponds exactly to the title of the journal. - Click GO and the journals matching the search will be listed. From this list you can see from what years the journal is available in full text. On top are listed the first and the last journal on the page in question. Previous and Next take the user to the previous or the next page of the list.
- Click the SFX icon to get to the fulltext or to check the availability of the paper journal in the library catalogue Hanna or in the union catalogue Linda.
If the journal is not listed, it means that it is not available in full text at Hanken. In that case, use LINDA to check which libraries have it in paper format.
How can I find books about research methods?
Literature not in the curriculum at Hanken, can mainly be found at the shelf 303 in the Book Collection. The best way to find them in Hanna is to use the Swedish words forskningsmetoder (=research methods), kvalitativa metoder (=qualitative methods), kvantitativa metoder (=quantitative methods), intervjuundersökning (=interviews), enkätundersökning (=questionnaries) , fallstudie (=cas studies), etc. Below you find some links to canned searches in Hanna.

Comments in the Libqual Inquiry 2008
Here are the answers to some of our library users' comments in the Libqual Inquiry, 2008.
Comment: The selection of course literature is really lousy and should definitively be improved. The same goes for the borrowing period for course literature. One week is really too short, two weeks (as at the University of Helsinki) could make it a lot easier. The reading room should also have more copies of all books [...]
The library provides one book per five students in a course. The number of books provided is based on the information we get from the Office of Study Affairs. If our estimate is wrong we acquire more books if possible and on request, but at the most we provide 20 copies for borrowing and 2 copies for the reading room. Comments on our selection of course books can be sent to books@hanken.fi.
If we changed the borrowing period from 7 days to 14 days, only 10 students would be able to read the book if 10 books were available. With a borrowing time of 7 days, 20 students would be able to read the book during the same time. If the book isn't reserved it can be renewed up to ten times. That is, it is possible for the same student to have the book for 10 weeks.
Comment: Some course books are not up-to-date. This should be improved and there should be more control over the course literatureThe edition of a course book acquired depends on the information we get from the study handbook just before it gets published. After the publishing date, we act upon updated information we get from the teacher. We acquire the latest edition if the teacher wants us to and if the edition is not sold out. Newer editions will usually be borrowed first which can give the impression that there are only older editions. Ask your teacher if the older editions are as good as newer ones.Comment: Some course books are arranged according to the first author's name and some according to another author's name, and some even according to the book title. This makes it more difficult to find which shelf the book is available on.
The library follows standard rules for cataloguing. The details in the Study Handbook are registered by the teacher. The standard rule is that if the book is not shelved according to the surname of the author, the book's title should be checked. The word according to which the book is shelved is marked with CAPITAL LETTERS in the HANNA database.
Comment: The library should have a loose-leaf copy of every course book, which could be used for copying, so that the book's cover could be removed and the pages could be stored in a folder to make copying easier [...].
According to copyright rules the library cannot support or encourage to the copying of entire works. Comment: [...] there should be the option to renew loans over the internet (as is possible at the University of Helsinki and Helsinki School of Economics) It is easy to log on with your library card number, your PIN code and surname and renew your loans at the following address: http://hanna.linneanet.fi.
Comment: Sometimes the system for book reservations seems idiotic [...].
You can reserve books currently out on loan yourself on the web or at the Library Service Desk. It costs 1 € per book to do so. When the book arrives you will receive a note via e-mail. Books that are on the shelf cannot be reserved!
Comment: E-mailing should be improved. Although I have provided information about my e-mail-address, I still get reminders by letter about books that are due. Please remember to update your data as a borrower at the Library Service Desk or at InfoBITen and not only in Oodi or at the Service Point.Comment: You should be able to access all material from home and from the IT Lab on the fourth floor [...]. Isn't there some way to combine all the databases into a meta-database?
All our databases are accessible through our Nelli portal. When using the following link:https://proxy.shh.fi/login?url=http://www.nelliportaali.fi you are asked to fill in your Hanken username and password if you are outside Hanken's IP area. The databases are accessible without any separate authentication on all Hanken's computers. You can search all the databases except Datastream and suomenlaki.com.
Nelli is a metadatabase, which makes it possible to search in many databases at the same time. SFX, the Ex Libris linking service, facilitates the transfer between databases when you are searching for an article on the web. Read more about searching the databases on the following page: http://www.hanken.fi/student/databaser?setlanguage=en
Comment: You cannot access the most important legal journals within the EU and USA through the Nelli portal.
Unfortunately it is not technically possible to list the legal journals in Westlaw and in the Nelli portal. For this reason we have made a register with direct links to the electronic journals that are available in Westlaw. The register is available on the following page:http://www.hanken.fi/student/ejournallists.
Comments collected from the 2010 customer survey
The library should remain open later, and students should have access even when closed.
Longer hours would require more staff, and the books can't be left unmonitored. In the future, the work area may be separated from the bookshelves as a partial solution.
More computers and work areas are needed.
Many of the comments were more relevant to Hanken as a whole. The library focuses on providing seats for individual work, and not groupwork.
The library is too noisy
Staff attempt to keep the library quiet, but conversations are necessary for customer service. The floor is a problem in conjunction with some types of shoes, but can't be changed due to architectural reasons. If other customers are having extended conversations, please contact the staff.
More course books
The library acquires one course book per five students for each course (basic courses have a maximum limit of 25). Unfortunately estimates are based on the previous year, and the library isn't always aware of late changes to books or participant numbers. Students are encouraged to report suspiciously low numbers of total copies directly to the library.
More recent books
The library tracks new releases in relevant subjects in three languages. Unfortunately this means that the newest books can't always be available in each language. Requests are welcome.
More ebooks
Note that for ebooks, only course-related ones are listed directly in Hanna. The ebook platforms the library subscribes to actually provide about 50 000 books. In addition, publishers often don't make popular books available as ebooks in order to sell more paper copies.
More electronic journals
The library subscribes to about 20 000 electronic journals. If you feel important ones are missing, feel free to contact the library.
Missing books
New books are replaced after they've been missing for long enough to be considered lost. Older, less used books fall back on interlibrary loans.
Thomson Datastream on more than one computer
Unfortunately licenses are quite expensive, so this is unlikely to change.
